Baby Diary 5 Months Old

My baby girl is now 5 months old! I don’t know where time is flying! (So much so I seem to have missed my month 4 update!) She seems to be growing up so quickly and now we are almost at the 6 month mark I am starting to feel a little sad that my maternity leave is flying by, I can’t help but feel a bit sad thinking that I’m over half way through my leave and I’m now on the downward hill to returning to work. However I am determined to make the most of the next few months I still have off.

She is is such a little smiler, she spends most of her day grinning away at people and pretty much smiles from the moment she sees me walk into her room on a morning. Those big eyes of hers light up and she kicks and flings her arms and legs in excitement. The only time she gets upset is when she is hungry or tired.

Unfortunately the tiredness can be a bit of a problem as she fights her sleep during the day (far too nosey and wanting to know what’s going on), especially when we are out and about and as a result gets a little distressed to say the least. I obviously do have to go out, especially with a toddler, but I do try to get her to have her morning or afternoon sleep in the house where possible and often find myself driving around in the car whilst she’s asleep at other times, purely to get her to have some kind of decent nap!

At home she tends to nap for an hour 2-3 times a day and occasionally she can go longer, but not very often. When we are out it is virtually impossible to get her to sleep anywhere, other than in her car seat. I regularly use my snooze shade, only to have her little arms and legs flinging about underneath it!

The bonus is that she, on the whole, does sleep through the night from 6.30 / 7pm to 7 / 7.30am and only occasionally wakes, which I can handle! ;-)

She loves sitting up on our knees and watches everything going on around her intently! She seems to be soaking up everything her big sister is doing and loves watching her. (Not sure if the terrible two’s tantrums are an ideal learning experience!) They both get on so well and her big sister simply adores her. I have gone into her room on a morning to find her big sister already in there talking to her through the cot bars, it’s so cute! She wants to go straight into her little sister’s room as soon as she wakes up every morning.

I’ve been taking her to a couple of groups I go to with my toddler and she loves watching the other kids. One of the groups we go to is a music and rhyme time session and she loves the nursery rhymes and music, her favourite at the minute being row, row, row the boat. We also attend a Baby Sensory group, which is our one on one time together. She really reacts to the singing, music and sensory experiences.

I’ve borrowed a bumbo style seat with activity tray and various toys on from my sister and she has recently started sitting in it and loves playing with all the rattles and toys. She can grasp and hold items, her favourite at the minute being my hair!

EVERYTHING goes into her mouth at the minute, including her feet now she is out of her Pavlik Harness! She is full of drool and soaks through bibs and tops! Her first tooth is just starting to poke through this week too. I thought it was coming from all the drool but I recently read a post on facebook where a lot of people were saying their child’s first tooth didn’t cut till 9 months old and a friend told me her daughter got her last tooth at 2! This surprised me as my eldest cut her first tooth at 3.5 months and had a full set just after she turned 1 so I just expected things to be the same this time but as the weeks went on I was starting to think it may be a while so was surprised when it appeared as if from nowhere!

As she is putting everything in her mouth I have decided to bite the bullet and begin weaning this month too! She is watching us intently when we eat and seems so curious. She also fights her bottle sometimes too, so I thought I’d give it a go slowly and see how we get on. I’ve got some weaning pots but am looking forward to buying some nice new food dishes and pots too. Any excuse!

Baby girl is a strong little thing and loves kicking her legs about, she lifts her bum up in the air and pushes back with her legs. Several times this week I’ve gone in the kitchen to get something and come back to find that she’s pushed herself off her play mat and onto and across our wood floor! I think it won’t be long before I need eyes in the back of my head! But I’m so looking forward to it!

  1. Enjoy your time, it goes so quickly, my eldest turned 24 today and I have no idea where the time went. :-)

  2. We are starting the weaning journey too with our little wriggler this month. We also have mega teething but D was the same and didn’t get his first until 8 months. He will be 2 next month and still has 4 left to come though!

I read so many people saying their kids didn’t come through till 9 months (I hadn’t realised they could be so late with my eldest daughter’s teeth arriving so quickly). Not nice for them and then they all drop out anyway! lol! Good luck with the weaning! x

  3. She sounds so cute and lovely, I can’t believe she’s already 5 months old. She sounds really inquisitive and like she’s a very chilled out baby!

  4. Aw I can’t believe she is only 5months! I miss my tiny little boy. You have so much to look forward to! Hope the weaning is going well xx
